San Francisco Division's territory includes the Silicon Valley as well
as several international business hubs, research and educational facilities.
As the world becomes connected electronically through the Internet, abuse
and exploitation of technology rises. The FBI is taking a proactive role
in law enforcement in the high technology and computer crimes arena.
These areas include the following: Computer Intrusion--The primary responsibility of the San Francisco Division's
two Computer Intrusion Squad is the investigation of cyber-based attacks,
primarily unauthorized access (intrusion) and denial of service, directed
at the major components of this country's critical information, military
and economic infrastructures. Critical infrastructure includes such
components as the nation's power grids and power-supply systems, transportation
control systems, money transfer and accounting systems, defense related
systems and telecommunications networks. Additionally, both Squad investigate cyber
attacks directed at private industry and public institutions that maintain
information vital to national security and/or the economic success of

to the theft of intellectual property, copyrighted materials and physical
crimes relating to the semiconductor industry, including the illegal

553-7400 Industrial Espionage--The Silicon Valley is home to many of the world's
leading high-technology research and development firms. Unfortunately
the same firms are often targeted by competitors as well as other nations
who seek to gather sensitive information illegally. Information such
as design, specifications, marketing and sales information are valuable
commodities both in the United States and abroad. The FBI investigates matters relating
to industrial and economic espionage. If you have information regarding

statute as a visual depiction of a minor (child younger than 18) engaged
in sexually explicit conduct. The FBI is active in investigating matters
involving the transmission, production and distribution of child pornography. All electronic communication providers
(as defined under Title 18 2510) or remote computing services (under
Title 18 2711), while engaged in serving the public, are now required
by law to report any knowledge of facts or circumstances involving child
