SAN FRANCISCO MAN CHARGED WITH ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY AND
THREE COUNTS OF BANK ROBBERY

SAN FRANCISCO—United States Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello announced that a federal grand jury in San Francisco indicted Scot Allan Beane on April 22, 2008 with one count of escape from custody and three counts of bank robbery. These charges are the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the indictment, Mr. Beane, 45, is alleged to have escaped from the custody of a federal halfway house and robbed three banks in San Francisco in four days. Mr. Beane is alleged to have escaped on April 4, 2008. Mr. Beane is charged with thereafter robbing banks in San Francisco on April 7, April 9, and April 10, 2008. A total of over $13,000 was stolen in these robberies.

An agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations arrested Mr. Bean in San Francisco on April 10, 2008. Mr. Bean remains in federal custody. The defendant’s next scheduled appearance is at 9:30 a.m. on April 28, 2008 for arraignment on the indictment before Judge Larson.

The maximum statutory penalty for one count of escape from custody, in violation of Title 18 U.S.C. § 751(a), is five years and a fine of $250,000. The maximum statutory penalty for each count of bank robbery, in violation of Title 18, U.S.C. § 2113(a), is twenty years and a fine of $250,000. However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

Lara Kroop and Gregg W. Lowder of the United States Attorney’s Office are prosecuting the case with the assistance of Elizabeth M. Garcia. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

An indictment contains only allegations against an individual and, as with all defendants, Mr. Beane must be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
